Artist Statement

Over more than 30 years as a photographer,
I have collected 1000s of images both on film
and in recent years; digital capture. Having
studied black and white photography and
also having worked in the darkroom, I knew
first hand the enjoyment that results from
having control over the creative process.

Wonderful changes came when I realized
that with the new digital technology, my
color work no longer had to go to an
anonymous lab where an unknown person
would work on my photographs adding his
own interpretation. I could now have total
control of my vision from inception to
completion; from the moment of making of
the picture to the processing and editing of
the final image.

My photography is greatly influenced by my love of Mexico and its people. It is
constantly beckoning me. I am drawn in by the marvelous warmth of the people and
the amazing serendipity of daily events. This is most apparent while traveling through
the back roads to remote communities which are still part of this century but clinging
always to the patterns of the last 4 centuries. The constant vibrancy of color and sound,
contrast with the pathos, and sometimes, despair of a people who cling to family and
tradition. The culture is very diverse in art, foods and landscape. Diversity manifests
itself in a rapidly changing tapestry from village to village and city to city; each area
stamping its own individuality on my photographs. Every hour of every day the
human quilt is displayed, changing with every trip, with every snap of the shutter. I
never tire of it.

I am also inspired by the West where I have lived for most of my life. I’m fascinated
with the way western history has shaped and molded contemporary life in the west
today. In Arizona, we still court the cowboy and his ethic perhaps because we envy
the less complicated and hectic lifestyle it represents. To spend a morning
photographing the wranglers and horses is more therapeutic for me than a day at a spa.

Since my work is produced digitally, each image can be varied by size and paper
media. This gives me the versatility to satisfy my clients and to provide galleries with
what they think will best fit in to their environment. Much of my work now is printed
in large format often as large as 40” X 60”.

My website is large and packed full of images that I have collected over many years.
Don’t try to view it in one sitting. Visit it when you have a few minutes to enjoy
the beauty, pathos and often humor I have experienced over a lifetime. I hope you
enjoy it. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!
